Picking up Photography

April 4, 2010 · 2 comments

In December 2009, I picked up something that I hope will last me a lifetime – photography. I’ve never been into taking photos, so this was a big thing for me. I don’t know how to take photos. I don’t know about composition, exposure, the ƒ or any of that other stuff. Holding a DSLR in my hand changed all this for me; now I want to know.

I’m not sure if it was actually photography or just the amazing capabilities of the DSLR that drove me into this, but the camera, with all its buttons and settings and different lenses did tickle my funny spot. I’m an engineer at heart, so having loads of options and total control of stuff really inspires me.

The Camera

I bought my first -ever- camera on December 28th, 2009. I chose Canon EOS 450D, the one my sister has and the one I had used once before. I also picked up Canon EF 50mm ƒ/1.4 USM lens the next day. According to a bunch of dudes & girls, it’s a really good prime and will get you started just fine.

There are so many variables you have to master with a DSLR, and if you get them right, you might get something extraordinary. I got a nifty little book with my DSLR and from there I learned the basics of shooting with a DSLR. I mainly shoot in Aperture priority mode now, watching the exposure meter and shutter speed. If I have my flash on, I switch to Manual mode.

Diving into photography

After three full months in, I’m starting to get the hang of things. I bought a flash in January, which has helped a lot, especially in-doors. I’ve also read a ton of strobist stuff. I hope one day I’ll be able to compose a master-piece photo using off-camera flash(es).

I haven’t fully discovered what my thing is, but if I keep on shooting, I bet I’ll get there some day.

To Conclude…

Photography does not yet come easy to me, but I do hope one day it will. I’m usually a quick learner, but I’m betting this is one subject which will take time. Luckily I’m a stubborn one.

    Hah, I just left a comment on my own blog recommending the 50mm ƒ1.4, but I see you’ve already got it (good choice). Enjoy your new hobby!

      @Ashley:
      Thanks! Yeah, the 50mm has been amazing – the sharpness & 1.4 ƒ-stop rock! But as I commented on your blog, it’s a bit narrow in-doors ;) Getting the 28mm soon, hopefully.
